Congratulations to the competitors and organisers at this year’s Iffley Festival of Miles; a celebration of former Vincent’s Club President Sir Roger Bannister’s iconic achievement in 1954 of running the world’s first ever sub-four minute mile at the famous track.
Organised by current Vincent’s Members Thomas Renshaw, Thomas Wood, Thomas Barrett, Samuel Nelson and Miles Weatherseed, this year’s celebration drew 230 athletes for a fantastic series of races in glorious Oxford sunshine watched by nearly 300 spectators.
In the women’s elite race, another Vincent, Alex Shipley, ran a PB of 4:45.53 to finish with the fastest ever time over the mile by an OUAC member and former Club President, Miles Weatherseed finished his elite mile in an impressive 4:10.17.
Running since 2012, the event was re-launched last year after Covid and introduced a race for Visually Impaired athletes at this year’s event.
Next year, on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6th, the Iffley Festival of Miles will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Oxford’s most iconic moment in sport, forming part of a commemoration year for Sir Roger, who was a lifelong supporter and friend of the Club.
